Kabak/shinok pun

kabak/shinok pun

also: кабак, шинок, kabak, shinok

A dialect joke Varenka makes at Belikov's expense: in standard Russian a "kabak" is a tavern, but among the khokhols pumpkins are called kabaks and taverns are called shinks, so her praise of her mother's kabaks momentarily sounds like praise of taverns.
