Ledokhod (spring ice breakup)

ice breakup

also: ледоход, лед тронулся, лед идет

The seasonal breaking-up and downstream carrying-off of river ice each spring, a recurring event of the Russian calendar treated as public spectacle -- crowds gather silently on bridges to watch the ice heave, crack, and pass, and its passing opens the river to the season's first timber rafts.
