Narodnik

also: народник, Narodnichestvo

A member of the Narodniks ("Populists"), the Russian agrarian-socialist movement of the 1870s-80s that idealized the peasantry and sought to "go to the people"; invoked here as the fleeting, ill-fitting self-image of the fictional character Boris in the play "The Wood Demon," whose attempt to dress like a peasant comes out looking Turkish instead.
