Period Ethnic Terminology: "Gypsies" and "Asiatics"

period ethnic terms

also: цыгане, азиаты, tsygane, aziaty

Chekhov's original text uses 'цыгане' (the standard, now-dated 19th-century Russian term for Romani people) and, once, the periphrastic 'азиаты' ('Asiatics') for the same Romani chorus performers -- reflecting the era's imprecise, exoticizing racial categorization of Romani people as an 'Eastern' or non-European group. Translated literally to preserve period diction; flagged here as historical usage, not endorsed as neutral or accurate ethnographic terminology.
