Retired Non-Commissioned Officer (social status)

retired NCO status

also: отставной унтер-офицер, отставной каптенармус

A retired sergeant or quartermaster-sergeant (like Prishibeyev) occupied a peculiar social rung above the peasantry -- literate, drilled in petty regulation and hierarchy, often given minor civilian posts (doorkeeper, watchman) after discharge -- but with no real civil authority; the type became a recognizable Russian figure prone to imposing military-style discipline on civilians who owe him nothing.
