The long, loose black outer robe worn by an Orthodox priest in everyday, non-liturgical dress, distinct from the ornate riza worn only while celebrating the service; a threadbare or patched ryasa was a visible, legible sign of a priest's poverty to any parishioner or visitor.

The ryasa is the long, loose black outer robe of an Orthodox priest's everyday dress (distinct from the riza, the ornate vestment worn only to celebrate the liturgy, which appears later at loc. 31). That Father Yakov's everyday ryasa is patched at both elbows and the color of weak coffee -- rather than a clean black -- is the first visual clue to his poverty, though Kunin reads it only as slovenliness.
