Sabadilla
sabadilla
also: сабадилла, sabadilla decoction
The dried seed of Schoenocaulon officinale, a Central American lily relative, ground or prepared as a decoction and used historically as a folk and pharmacy remedy against lice (it contains veratrine alkaloids toxic to insects); Chekhov suggests it here, half-jokingly, as a pharmacy purchase in the middle of a self-mocking riff on his own uncleanliness.
