Skopshchina (sharecropping)

skopshchina

also: скопщина

A sharecropping arrangement common in post-emancipation rural Russia, in which a landholder let land out to a peasant tenant in exchange for a share of the harvest; Chekhov cites it as the economically realistic option a poorly paid sexton would take with a small landholding, in place of the implausible plowing scene in Khlopov's story.
