St. George's Day

The spring feast of St. George (April 23 O.S.), traditionally the day cattle were first driven out to pasture and a folk benchmark for when snow should finally be gone; a peasant woman on the road to Shuteikino remarks that the snow looks set to lie on the ground until St. George's Day, registering how unseasonably late and hard the winter has turned.
