"гандон" (rubber johnny)

gandon

also: гандон, rubber johnny

A crude period slang term for a condom (from French "gant de Londres"), used here abusively as an insult hurled at Alexander -- roughly 'you rubber johnny, you!' -- amid a string of fraternal taunts about Alexander's vanity and idleness. It carries no literal sexual reference in context; it functions purely as coarse, contemptuous name-calling of the kind common in Chekhov's private letters to his erratic elder brother. Preserved in translation without softening, per this corpus's editorial policy of presenting documented usage factually rather than suppressing or euphemizing it.
