"Zhidovka" (жидовка) -- ethnic slur

zhidovka slur

also: жидовка, mangy Yid woman, pархатая жидовка

Susanna, imagining how the lieutenant will describe her to his future wife after the wedding, puts the ethnic slur "zhidovka" (жидовка, with the intensifying epithet "pарxатая," roughly "mangy"/"scabby") into his projected mouth herself -- rendered here as "mangy Yid woman." Preserved unaltered and unsoftened as an accurate rendering of the historical source; flagged here as a documented instance of the casual, internalized antisemitism that runs through the story, voiced in this instance by the Jewish character about herself, not an endorsement by narrator or translator.
