The killing of several striking textile workers on 1 May 1891 in Fourmies, France, when troops fired on a May Day demonstration; the government's conduct was the subject of a stormy interpellation of the Minister of the Interior in the Chamber of Deputies, which Chekhov attended and reported on with evident relish.
