The killing of several striking textile workers on 1 May 1891 in Fourmies, France, when troops fired on a May Day demonstration; the government's conduct was the subject of a stormy interpellation of the Minister of the Interior in the Chamber of Deputies, which Chekhov attended and reported on with evident relish.

On 1 May 1891, French troops fired on striking textile workers and May Day demonstrators at Fourmies, in the Nord department, killing several and wounding many more. The killings provoked national outrage and a parliamentary interpellation of the Minister of the Interior (Ernest Constans) over the government's use of force; Chekhov happened to be present at the resulting stormy Chamber session, held within days of the shooting, while he was passing through Paris.
