Strastnaya Nedelya (Holy Week / Passion Week)
Holy Week
also: Страстная неделя, Passion Week, Holy Week (pre-Easter)
The final week of Great Lent immediately preceding Orthodox Easter, commemorating Christ's Passion; the traditional week for children to be brought to confession and first communion in preparation for the feast, as Fedya is sent to do here. Distinct from Bright/Easter Week (festival:easter-bright-week), which follows Easter Sunday rather than precedes it.
Reading notes
- During Holy Week §1 Go on, they're ringing already
The bells are ringing for the Wednesday-of-Holy-Week service; it was customary practice for Orthodox children to be brought to confession and first communion during Strastnaya Nedelya (Passion/Holy Week), the week of fasting and penance immediately preceding Easter Sunday -- distinct from Bright/Easter Week, which follows the feast.
- The Student §2 because it was Good Friday
Страстная пятница ("Holy/Good Friday") is the day within Strastnaya Nedelya (Holy Week) commemorating Christ's crucifixion; a strict fast day on which observant Orthodox households, like the student's own, would not cook. The story is set on the evening before this Good Friday, with Easter itself (see Section 16) two days off.
