Baron Alphonse d'Argenton

Argenton

also: Аржантон

FICTIONAL CHARACTER, the pretentious "poet" figure of Alphonse Daudet's 1874 novel "Jack", to whom Chekhov attributes the line "life is not a novel" as a gloss on Sasha's romantic self-delusion about redeeming Ivanov in "Ivanov." A literary allusion to an existing independent work outside this corpus, not a Chekhov original.
