figure

the doctor (Thomson, or Wilson)

also: Томсон, Вильсон, Thomson, Wilson

The parable's country doctor within Mikhail Karlovich's grandmother's story: an elderly, reclusive, self-sacrificing physician given two interchangeable Western names and no fixed nationality, built up as a figure of near-hagiographic virtue -- loved even by robbers and animals -- before being found murdered, his death first ruled an accident by the town's judges and then, after the culprit is caught with overwhelming evidence against him, quietly unavenged by an acquittal.
