Feodosy the pilgrim
Feodosy
also: Феодосии, странник, the wanderer, ряска, the cassock
A wandering pilgrim (bogomolets) in a short monk's cassock and broad-brimmed hat, en route to visit his relative Mikhail Polikarpych near the Makukhino brickworks after five hundred versts on foot; he stumbles on the corpse-watch, is overcome with superstitious terror at the sight of the dead body, and begs, then bribes, the young peasant to escort him to the village rather than walk on alone in the dark.
