Fortunatov

also: жандарм Фортунатов

An invented character, a gendarme visiting relatives in the village who inserts himself into the interrogation with official-sounding bluster and gleefully urges the flogging on to the story's last line. Distinct from the psalm-reader Fortunatov of "Petrov Den'" -- Chekhov reuses the surname for unrelated invented characters.
