Title character of Goncharov's novel "Oblomov", a chronically listless, sofa-bound landowner; Chekhov dismisses him here as an overdrawn, insubstantial figure -- "a flabby sluggard of a kind there are plenty of" -- not weighty enough to justify elevation into a social type or a whole novel.
