Ivan Ivanych (the goose)

Ivan Ivanych

also: Иван Иваныч

The performing goose belonging to the circus performer in Chekhov's "Kashtanka," one of Auntie's fellow animals. In the closing chapter, "A Restless Night," he dies overnight from an injury (a horse had stepped on him earlier that day), his strange cries and death narrated entirely through Auntie's uncomprehending fear and grief. Distinct from the many other unrelated "Ivan Ivanych" human characters elsewhere in the Chekhov corpus.
