Kashtanka

also: Каштанка, Тетка, Auntie

The mongrel dog protagonist of Chekhov's novella "Kashtanka" (1887); after being lost by her original owner, the carpenter Luka Alexandrych, she is taken in and renamed "Auntie" (Тетка) by a circus performer ("Mr. George") who trains her alongside the cat Fyodor Timofeyich and the goose Ivan Ivanych. In the closing chapter ("A Restless Night"/"Беспокойная ночь"), narrated from her point of view, she lives through the goose's death without understanding it.
