Marya Viktorovna Dolzhikova

The engineer Dolzhikov's daughter, twenty-five, a trained singer who studied at the Petersburg Conservatory; charming, restless, and given to earnest self-reproach over her wealth. Marries Misail and moves with him to the family estate at Dubechnya to farm on principle, but grows disillusioned with peasant life and the marriage, ultimately leaving for a singing career abroad and asking Misail by letter to release her.
