The murder victim of "The Murder": Yakov Ivanych's younger brother, a former tile-factory worker of about forty-five who, as a young man, fell into an ecstatic self-declared sainthood among a following of women before an employer talked him back to ordinary piety. Returned home sickly and self-righteous, he hectors his brother daily to repent, presses him over their jointly held inheritance, and is killed by Aglaya and Yakov over a bottle of Lenten oil.
