A medical student, one of Vasilyev's two carefree friends on the night tour of S-- Lane's brothels; sings, dances, talks over the women's personal histories as trivial gossip, and later, holding that a doctor must be cool and serious in any circumstance, treats Vasilyev's breakdown with brisk, unruffled competence and walks him to the psychiatrist Mikhail Sergeich. The medical student's clinical, determinedly unruffled diagnosis-in-passing -- offered on the spot, without examination -- is the story's first instance of the same reflexive, professionalized calm that will define Mikhail Sergeich's consultation at greater length; Chekhov, himself a physician, gives this detachment real substance rather than staging it as mere callousness, even as the story's sympathy plainly lies with Vasilyev's suffering.
