The narrator of "Whining" (N. N.)

An unnamed former bank bookkeeper, convicted of forgery and embezzlement and exiled to a village near Krasnoyarsk, who writes a rambling, self-pitying letter to a friend describing his lodgings, a night of unbearable toothache, and his fury at a sensationalized newspaper report on his supposed life of dissipation in exile.
