Cabman No. 13326, whose horse he whips to death driving the fleeing lovers to the station; grieves briefly over the dead animal, then, offered a hundred roubles by the vindicated Count, nobly refuses payment and reframes the horse's death as a sacrifice in defense of family life -- the story's ironic title payoff.
