Headnote
1 "A Sudden Horse’s Death, or the Magnanimity of the Russian People!" (1888) is a slight, self-mocking burlesque cast as a one-act "dramatic sketch" in the manner of the melodramas Chekhov loved to parody. A young lover, a countess fleeing her husband, and a hapless cabman flog a horse to death racing for a train station; when the horse’s collapse lets the outraged Count catch the fleeing pair, he rewards the cabman’s dead animal with a hundred roubles, and the cabman – to the crowd’s admiration – nobly refuses payment, framing his horse’s death as a sacrifice in defense of the sanctity of marriage. The title’s irony undercuts itself: nothing here is remotely magnanimous, and the "national character" it claims to celebrate is casual cruelty dressed up as sentiment.
2 The playlet is framed by a fictional postscript: a "Member of the Society of Dramatic Writers and Opera Composers," one Akaky Tarantulov, claims the sketch was staged by amateurs on the shore of Lake Baikal on "the 30th of February" (a date that does not exist, tipping the reader to the joke) and appends a grievance-laden list of demands to the Society – lottery tickets funded from the treasury, a military band at meetings, and so on – satirizing the guild politics and self-important minor playwrights of the St. Petersburg literary scene Chekhov knew from his early hack-writing years. The whole piece is a nested parody: a bad melodrama, "reviewed" by a self-important hack, published by an editorial voice that ironically praises both.
3 The horse’s beating and death, and the offhand ethnic/social slurs exchanged between characters ("son of a hen,wretched creature,you anathema"), are period comic-abusive language typical of coachman banter in the genre being parodied; they are preserved without softening, as the cruelty is the joke’s engine, not incidental color. Sensitive readers should note the casual violence toward the animal is played entirely for comic effect and is central to the story’s satirical target.

Lyubvin (embracing her). Oh, how I love you! But still I shall not be at peace until we reach the station and are seated in the carriage. My heart tells me that your scoundrel of a husband will set off after us in pursuit this very moment. My knees are shaking. (To Nil.) Drive faster, devil take you!
Любвин (обнимая). О, как я люблю тебя! Но все-таки я не буду в спокое, покуда мы не доедем до вокзала и не сядем в вагон. Чувствует мое сердце, что твой подлец-муж бросится сейчас за нами в погоню. У меня поджилки трясутся. (Нилу). Поезжай скорее, чёрт!
Countess. Faster, cabman! Give her the whip! You don’t know how to drive, you son of a hen!
Графиня. Скорее, извозчик! хлобысни-ка ее кнутом! Ездить не умеешь, курицын сын!
Nil (lashing the horse). Now then! Now then, cholera take you! The gentlefolk will add to your tip.
Нил (хлещет по лошади). Но! но, холера! Господа на чай прибавят.
Countess (crying out). That’s it! That’s it! Lay it on, you wretched creature, or we’ll be late for the train!
Графиня (кричит). Так ее! Так ее! Нажаривай, дрянь этакую, а то к поезду опоздаем!
Lyubvin (embracing her and marveling at her unearthly beauty). Oh, my darling! Soon, soon will come the hour when you belong wholly to me, and not at all to your husband! (Looking back, in horror.) Your husband is catching up with us! I see him! Cabman, drive on! Faster, scoundrel, a hundred devils on your collar! (Strikes Nil on the back.)
Любвин (обнимая и восторгаясь ее неземной красотой). О, моя дорогая! Скоро, скоро уже тот час, когда ты будешь принадлежать всецело мне, но отнюдь не мужу! (Оглядываясь, с ужасом.) Твой муж догоняет нас! Я его вижу! Извозчик, погоняй! Скорей, мерзавец, сто чертей тебе за воротник! (Лупит Нила в спину.)
Countess. Hit him on the back of the head! Wait, I’ll do it myself with my parasol... (Strikes him.)
Графиня. По затылку его! Постой, я сама его зонтиком... (Лупит.)
Nil (lashing with all his might). Now then! Now then, move, you anathema! (The exhausted horse falls and dies.)
Нил (хлещет изо всех сил). Но! Но! шевелись, анафема! (Изморенная лошадь падает и издыхает.)
Lyubvin. The horse has died! Oh, horror! He’ll catch us now!
Любвин. Лошадь издохла! О, ужас! Он нас догонит!
Nil. My poor head, what shall I feed myself on now? (Falls upon the body of his beloved horse and sobs.)
Нил. Головушка моя бедная, чем же я теперь кормиться буду? (Припадает к трупу любимой лошади и рыдает.)

Count. Running from me, are you?! Stop! (Seizes his wife by the arm.) Traitress! Did I not love you? Did I not feed you?

Lyubvin (faint-heartedly). Time for me to take to my heels! (Runs off amid the noise of the gathered crowd.)
Любвин (малодушно). Задам-ка я стрекача! (Убегает под шум собравшейся толпы.)
Count (to Nil). Cabman! The death of your horse has saved my family hearth from disgrace. Had it not died suddenly, I should not have caught the fugitives. Here’s a hundred roubles for you!
Граф (Нилу). Извозчик! Смерть твоей лошади спасла мой семейный очаг от поругания. Если бы она не издохла внезапно, то я не догнал бы беглецов. Вот тебе сто рублей!
Nil (magnanimously). Noble Count! I have no need of your money! For me it shall be reward enough to know that the death of my beloved horse served to safeguard the foundations of family life! (The delighted crowd hoists him on their shoulders.)
Нил (великодушно). Благородный граф! Не нужно мне ваших денег! Для меня послужит достаточной наградой сознание, что смерть моей любимой лошади послужила к ограждению семейных основ! (Восхищенная толпа качает его.)

In the year 1886, on the 30th of February, this play of mine was performed on the shore of Lake Baikal by amateurs of the dramatic art. At that time I also enrolled as a member of the Society of Dramatic Writers and received from the treasurer A. A. Maikov the appropriate honorarium. Since then I have written no more plays and received no more honoraria.
В 1886 году, 30 февраля, эта моя пьеса была сыграна на берегу озера Байкала любителями сценического искусства. Тогда же я записался в члены Общества Драматических писателей и получил от казначея А. А. Майкова надлежащий гонорар. Больше я никаких пьес не писал и никакого гонорара не получал.
And so, being a member of the aforementioned Society and possessing the rights that this title confers, I, on behalf of our party, do earnestly demand: first, that the chairman, the treasurer, the secretary, and the committee publicly beg my pardon; second, that all the above-named officers be voted out of office and replaced by members of our party; third, that 25,000 of the Society’s annual budget be allotted every year to the purchase of tickets in the Hamburg lottery, and that every winning be divided equally among all the members; fourth, that at general and special meetings of the Society a military band shall play and a proper buffet be served; fifth, since the whole income of the Society goes only to those 30 members whose plays are performed in the provinces, while the remaining 390 members receive not a kopeck, their plays being performed nowhere, therefore, in the interests of justice and equal rights, that a petition be brought before the higher authorities that these 30 members be forbidden to stage their plays, so as not to disturb that equilibrium so necessary to the normal course of affairs.
Итак, состоя членом названного Общества и имея права, сим званием обусловленные, я от имени нашей партии настоятельно требую, чтобы, во 1-х, председатель, казначей, секретарь и комитет публично попросили у меня извинения; во 2-х, чтобы все перечисленные должностные лица были забаллотированы и заменены членами из нашей партии; в 3-х, чтобы 25 тыс. из годового бюджета Общества были ежегодно ассигнуемы на покупку билетов гамбургской лотереи и чтобы каждый выигрыш делился между всеми членами поровну; в 4-х, чтобы на общих и экстренных собраниях Общества играла военная музыка и подавалась приличная закуска; в 5-х, так как весь доход Общества поступает в пользу только тех 30 членов, пьесы которых идут в провинции, и так как остальные 390 членов не получают ни гроша, ибо их пьесы нигде не идут, то в видах справедливости и равноправия ходатайствовать перед высшим правительством, чтобы этим 30 членам было запрещено ставить свои пьесы и тем нарушать равновесие, столь необходимое для нормального хода дел.
In conclusion I consider it necessary to give warning that should even one of the points named above receive a negative answer, I shall be compelled to resign my title as member of the Society.
В заключение считаю нужным предупредить, что если хотя на один из означенных пунктов последует отрицательный ответ, то я вынужден буду сложить с себя звание члена Общества.
