The blunt, overworked district doctor in "Grief" (1885), never directly shown except through Grigory Petrov's rehearsed, fearful imagination of the scolding he expects to receive on arrival at the hospital; appears in person only at the story's end, dismissing the dying Grigory with a wave of the hand.
