Sergei Nikanorych

The impoverished buffet-keeper at Progonnaya station, a once-prosperous first-class-station buffet-man reduced by a string of misfortunes to selling cheap tea and tarry sausage; badly in debt and badgering Matvei for a loan, he witnesses the murder from the doorway, is paid fifteen hundred rubles by Yakov for his silence, and is later convicted alongside the family and sentenced to ten years' penal servitude.
