Solomon

Moisei Moiseich's younger brother, a short, red-haired, openly contemptuous man who works as an unwilling "lackey" at his brother's steppe inn. In sections 208-217 he delivers a bitter, extended monologue about his own position as a poor Jew under the Empire's antisemitic restrictions, twice applying to himself and once to Varlamov the period slur \emph{жид пархатый} ("mangy Jew") -- Chekhov's own deliberate characterization of internalized antisemitism, not incidental language. Once a successful fairground performer of comic "Jewish life" scenes, he now refuses all such performance and instead speaks with real, unmasked anger. A fictional character, not a real person.
