The infant daughter of Zinaida Fyodorovna and Georgy Orlov, born in Nice shortly before her mother's death and registered under her mother's legal husband's surname, Krasnovsky. The dying narrator raises her alone for two years before returning to Petersburg to secure her future, ending the story watching him from a table "as though she knew her fate was being decided."
