Johann Friedrich Struensee (1737-1772), German-born royal physician and de facto chief minister of Denmark under Christian VII, whose sweeping Enlightenment reforms ended with his execution after a court coup; the title figure of the play Pleshcheyev sent Chekhov and, in \S5 of, Chekhov's shorthand for a needed type of reforming statesman ("Russia too needs its own Struensee").
