The nine-year-old protagonist of "Vanka," apprenticed three months earlier to the Moscow bootmaker Alyakhin; on Christmas Eve he secretly writes a letter to his grandfather describing the beatings and hunger he suffers and begging to be taken home, then posts it addressed only "To Grandfather, in the village" -- an address that can never find its recipient.
