Vasilyev

also: Васильев, Grigory, Gregory, Grisha, Grishka, Grigorianz, Gri-Gri, Григорий, Гриша, Гришка, Григорианц

A third-year law student, the story's protagonist, talked by two carefree friends into a night's tour of the brothels of Moscow's S-- Lane; unlike them he cannot treat the outing as an ordinary amusement, and the story follows his mounting horror through the night into a full nervous breakdown -- sleeplessness, self-mutilation, an aborted impulse toward suicide on a bridge over the Yauza -- and finally a visit to a fashionable psychiatrist who doses his moral anguish with bromide and morphine. Described elsewhere as possessing an unusual 'talent for humanity,' a raw, involuntary empathy for others' pain.
