A quiet, unusually keen-eyed wagon driver on the steppe crossing, gentle toward animals and possessed of an almost visionary attentiveness to the steppe's wildlife -- he is the only one of the party who spots a distant running fox -- that sets him apart from the coarser, more careless Dymov. A fictional character of "The Steppe," not a real person.
