An unnamed young, tall peasant with a barely visible mustache and thick black eyebrows, one of the two men keeping the required overnight watch ("ponyatye") beside an unidentified corpse found by the roadside; he carves a spoon to pass the time, needles his simple-minded companion Sema, and finally leads the terrified pilgrim Feodosy to the village for a five-kopeck fee.
