Voevodsk Prison

Described in the story as "the most wretched and severe of all the prisons on Sakhalin," a real katorga (penal-labor) prison near Aleksandrovsk on Sakhalin's west coast, documented by Chekhov in his 1890 investigation of the island; Yakov Ivanych serves his sentence there after being convicted of Matvei's murder.
