The quoted wire keeps the clipped, preposition-light phrasing of real Russian telegraphic style ("Уведомьте, когда идет пассажирский пароход Томск" -- literally "Advise when goes passenger steamer Tomsk," with articles and prepositions dropped to save words at telegraph rates), preserved in English as compressed directive phrasing ("Advise when passenger steamer departs for Tomsk") rather than normalized into full prose. Whether Chekhov travels on by steamer or by a grueling thousand-and-a-half-verst overland trip through spring mud depends on the answer he is waiting for.
