Adashev (anticipated Sumy performer, 1889)
Adashev (Sumy, uncertain)
also: Адашев
The unnamed local/provincial actor Chekhov anticipates, with amused curiosity, will play the role of Adashev (the fictional character in Suvorin's "Tatyana Repina,") in the upcoming Sumy theater production. Likely a different, local performer rather than the actor Lensky, who is named separately and later in this same letter (\S16) in connection with a touring engagement to Tiflis, not to Sumy; flagged as uncertain and not merged with any specific named actor entity.
Reading notes
- To A. S. Suvorin, 4 May 1889. Sumy. §8 what Adashev will be like!
"Адашев" here names the role in "Tatyana Repina", but the referent Chekhov actually anticipates with curiosity is the (unnamed) local Sumy actor who will play that role in the upcoming provincial production -- a distinct, uncertain identity, tracked separately as. This is very likely a different, local performer, NOT the actor Lensky, even though Lensky is closely associated with the Adashev role and the Tatyana Repina casting elsewhere in this corpus; Lensky is named separately and later in this same letter (\S16) in connection with a touring engagement to Tiflis, not to Sumy, which argues against conflating the two. Flagged explicitly as uncertain.
