Alexander Smagin

One of the Smagin siblings of Poltava province (near Sorochintsy), whom the Chekhov household visited in June 1888; strikes his forehead on a chestnut tree in the dark while rushing to greet the arriving guests, and is noted (with Natalya Mikhailovna) for a habit of causeless laughter (§5). Distinct from the unrelated 1890s Melikhovo neighbor (Alexander Ivanovich Smagin), a different landowner of the same surname and given name.
