Alyona

A small, pale, simple-minded local village girl, the only one of the estate's own villagers still willing to work as a maidservant, kept in service only because her wages support her mother and grandmother; frightened of dismissal, she breaks crockery and is docked pay for it, and becomes the target of Vera's sudden eruption of rage in section 78, a scene the story frames as Vera frightening herself with her own inherited cruelty.
