Chikeldeyev

A young telegraphist at the dacha-country train station in "The Grasshopper," described by Olga Ivanovna as handsome, not stupid, and having something "strong, bearlike" in his face -- fit, she says, to be painted as a young Varangian. A man of modest means, alone in the world and shy, his wedding is the occasion the assembled summer colony of painters and dacha-dwellers has pledged to attend, and it is Olga's promise to appear at it, appropriately dressed, that sends Dymov rushing back to the city for her pink dress and flowers on the night he has come to visit her at the dacha. Chikeldeyev himself never appears on the page.
