A wealthy Polish count whose estate the colonel and his driver take shelter at during the Christmas Eve blizzard; the count himself is absent, living in Paris, so the household is run in his stead by his steward, Kazimir Khaptsinsky.

Wealthy Polish landowning families frequently spent extended periods, or lived permanently, abroad -- especially in Paris -- while stewards managed their estates in the Russian and Austrian partitions of Poland; the absentee count is a familiar type, and his absence is what allows the story's midnight visitor plot to occur in his empty manor house.
