Demakov Printing House
Demakov
also: Демаков, Demakov
The Petersburg printing house (owned by V. S. Balashev, operating under the Demakov name) used by Suvorin's "Novoye Vremya" enterprises for typesetting, including the printed text of "Ivanov"; here blamed for a delay sending Chekhov his offprints despite demand from Rassokhin's lending library. Functions in the correspondence as shorthand for the printing house/printer rather than necessarily a single named individual Chekhov had met personally; recurs later in the corpus (e.g.) in connection with printing and offprint delays.
Reading notes
- To A. N. Pleshcheyev, 7 March 1889. Moscow. §5 Demakov for some reason is not sending me the offprints
The Demakov printing house (NEW entity), the Petersburg printing house used by Suvorin's "Novoye Vremya" enterprises for typesetting, including the printed text of "Ivanov"; functions here as shorthand for the printing house/printer rather than necessarily a single named individual. Recurs later in the corpus (e.g.) in connection with printing and offprint delays -- reuse this entity_id there rather than creating a duplicate.
- To A. M. Yevreinova, 10 March 1889. Moscow. §10 Mr. Demakov
The Petersburg printing house handling "Ivanov"'s proof-sheets, already established in (a letter to Pleshcheyev three days earlier, 7 March 1889) as responsible for delaying Chekhov's offprints; this letter's joking threat to send "seconds" (duel witnesses) after Demakov continues that same complaint.
- To I. L. Leontyev, 18 September 1889. Moscow. §6 Demakov's printing house
The Petersburg printing house that set the journal Severny Vestnik, where the novella in progress was headed to appear.
- To M. N. Albov, 20 November 1891. Moscow. §7 Demakov
Named here only by surname as the person who will reckon ("сочтет") how many printer's signatures (listy) the story runs to, for the purpose of calculating Chekhov's fee. The corpus's entity -- the Petersburg printing house used by Novoye Vremya-linked enterprises for typesetting -- already flags this very letter in its summary as a place the name recurs in connection with printing matters, so it is reused here rather than treated as a separate individual.
