Denis Grigoryev

A small, gaunt, barefoot peasant from Klimovo brought before an examining magistrate for unscrewing nuts from the railway track to use as fishing-line sinkers; his baffled, entirely sincere insistence that he meant no harm, played against the magistrate's mounting incredulity, is the whole engine of the story.
