A down-at-heel, uncertain figure -- half tramp, half fallen gentleman, in dreadful boots and a torn sheepskin coat over a waistcoat -- who talks his way onto the timber raft not for wages but simply to ride to town for free, then leads the raftsmen's futile remonstrance against the factory owner who threatens to stop them for breaking his footbridges.
