The district doctor, urbane, well-traveled, and something of a connoisseur of the arts, whose calm, appreciative response to Treplyov's experimental play in Act One is the only encouragement it receives. He is the object of Polina Andreyevna's long-standing, unrequited devotion, which he deflects with weary courtesy rather than cruelty, and it is Dorn who is sent to examine Treplyov offstage in the play's final moments, returning to draw Trigorin quietly aside rather than announce to the room what he has found.
