Johann Peter Eckermann, Goethe's secretary and interlocutor in his final years, whose recorded table talk was published as "Conversations with Goethe" -- a work Chekhov elsewhere draws on. Here he notes he had recently had the pair "in mind" ("легки на помине", literally "easy to recall" / "speak of the devil") because he had just referred to their conversations in his "great novel," the novella-in-progress "The Duel".
