Johann Peter Eckermann

German author (1792-1854) best known as Goethe's secretary and interlocutor in his final years, whose recorded table talk was published as "Conversations with Goethe." Chekhov invokes Goethe and Eckermann's conversations together as a pair, having recently referred to them in "The Duel", then in progress.
