A grandmother figure, identified only by the initials F. Ya., distinct from Evgenia Yakovlevna (Chekhov's own mother); Chekhov proposes that Alexander's children be placed in her household rather than his own overcrowded flat. Not further identified in the surviving letters. Not to be confused with the unrelated household member 'F. Ya.' mentioned in (1880), sending regards to Yulia Lyadova's uncle and aunt.

TWO GRANDMOTHERS, NOT TO BE CONFLATED: "Grandmother F. Ya." is a distinct person from Evgenia Yakovlevna named two sentences earlier in section 5 -- she is not Chekhov's mother, but a separate grandmother figure (surname unrecorded beyond the initials) to whose household the children are actually to be sent. Do not read this passage as proposing the children live with Chekhov's own mother after all; the letter explicitly rules that out.
