The twenty-eight-year-old priest of Sinkovo, fresh from the seminary bench, whose womanish face, patched cassock, and nervous, servile manner lead Kunin to dismiss him as an unimpressive drunkard. In fact nearly all of his meager hundred-and-fifty-rouble annual income goes to support his brother at seminary, his destitute and disgraced predecessor Father Avraamy, and reflects the same pride that keeps the doctor's wife from being seen doing her own laundry; he confesses his poverty to Kunin only in an agony of shame, near the story's end.
