Olga Ivanovna's estranged, unnamed husband, who meets his children in secret at a confectioner's, plies them with treats, and tells them that Belyaev is the man who ruined their mother's life and that they are all three unhappy -- words Alyosha unwittingly repeats to Belyaev.
